Getting started with ElevenLabs

  1. Install the official library using pip install elevenlabs for Python or npm install @elevenlabs/elevenlabs js for Node.js.
  2. Initialize the ElevenLabs client by importing ElevenLabs and passing your API key.
  3. Call client.text_to_speech.with_raw_response.convert with your desired text and voice_id to generate speech audio.
  4. Retrieve the generated audio data from response.data and extract metadata like character cost from the response headers.

Tips

  • Use Flash models such as eleven_flash_v2_5 over deprecated Turbo models for lower average latency.
  • Raise conversation.max_duration_seconds in the API or Max conversation duration in the dashboard's Advanced tab to allow conversations longer than the default 10 minutes.
  • Allowlist the static egress IPs from ElevenLabs if your server is behind a firewall to ensure it only accepts authorized WebSocket connections.
