Getting started with Braintrust

  1. Sign up for a free account at braintrust.dev.
  2. Create a Braintrust API key under Settings > API keys and set it as the BRAINTRUST_API_KEY environment variable.
  3. Install the Braintrust SDK and your required libraries using your project's package manager.
  4. Run the agent assisted setup wizard in your project directory using curl -fsSL https://braintrust.dev/wizard/setup.sh | sh to inspect the project, install the SDK, and configure tracing.
  5. Run your application and make an AI call to verify traces appear in your logs.
  6. Create and run an evaluation defining data test cases, an AI task function, and scorers.

Tips

  • Verify that your BRAINTRUST_API_KEY environment variable starts with sk- if traces are not appearing in the UI.
  • Ensure the project name configured in your SDK initialization matches the project in the UI.
  • Use bt switch to select the active profile, organization, and project context by default when using the CLI.
