Getting started with Vapi

  1. Log in to the Vapi dashboard and click on Evals in the left sidebar under Observability.
  2. Click Create Evaluation to start setting up your test.
  3. Configure the basic settings by entering a Name and Description for your evaluation.
  4. Add conversation turns by clicking Add Message, selecting message types, and configuring the evaluation criteria with an AI Judge.
  5. Click Save Evaluation to store your evaluation setup.
  6. Select Assistant or Squad as your target type under the Run Test section and click Run Evaluation.
  7. View your test results and click View Details to inspect the full conversation transcript.

Tips

  • Before relying on an AI judge, check that it accepts a correct response and rejects an invalid one.
  • Evals run at the text and model layer, so use Simulations for complete conversations and controlled real calls for testing the phone path and live integrations.
  • You can run evaluations with transient assistant or squad configurations by providing assistant or squad objects instead of IDs in the target.
